Why insurance premiums increase

January 15, 2023

Insurance providers evaluate claims and expenses based on location, vehicle or home type, value of the property stolen or insured, and frequency of incidents. In addition, they take into account other things including DUI convictions, the number of registered vehicles a household has, credit history, and driving records. Based on the total data they have on all customers, insurance companies can determine premiums. When there is greater risk involved, rates rise. Rates may rise for everyone in that area if the danger rises in one particular place. Even if the value of the claims isn't substantial, a high claim rate in a particular area can result in higher rates. Everybody's premiums will go up if the rate of insurance fraud rises considerably in one location. Common changes or policy activity can also increase premiums:

Your car is now older.
You have a newer car.
Your miles driven has increased.
You have been in a recent accident.
You filed a claim last year.
There's been an increase in accidents in your area.
There's been and increase in weather-related claims in your area.
There's been an increase in crime in your area.

You may plan for the future and reduce premiums by talking with your insurer about the causes of premium hikes. Working with independent agents who can look around for the best prices and discounts for you can lower insurance rates.

Attention Canadians & foreign residents

november 4, 2022

Do you have enough coverage?  Why does this matter?

Your assets, whether located within or outside of the United States may still be at risk if a judgement is rendered stateside.  A judgement would have to be domesticated in Canada (as well as other countries) which isn’t a simple process but can be done.

What does that mean for YOU? Work with your agent to ensure you maximize your liability coverages through you home and auto policies within your budget.  As a non-US citizen, you cannot obtain an Umbrella policy so we recommend considering higher limits on your home and auto policies.  With many of our carriers, you can access up to $1 million dollars in coverage.

Please note that different carriers have unique policy language which may affect how the coverage applies to you and your assets.  If you would like to add coverage or have questions, be sure to reach out to your agent.  We’re here to help you and take care of your insurance needs.

Water Loss Prevention

March 14, 2022

Water losses can be more formidable than they appear.  With the right factors, water can become mold, rot and weaken portions of your home.  Prevention and quickly addressing water losses will help reduce damages.

Here are some easy ways to prevent water losses:
  • Turn your water off at the shut-off valve when you’re gone for extended timeframes.  I’m talking to you seasonal residents!
  • Utilize water sensors.  These are sensors you can place under or near fixtures that may leak.  Think under sinks, next to toilets/tubs and water heaters.  If the sensor detects excess moisture, you will be notified by phone or an alarm.
  • Regular inspection of HVAC units that are located in the attic is helpful.

In the event you suffer a water loss, it’s important to address the removal of the water as soon as possible.  Water mitigation companies specialize in the extraction and drying of water.  Immediate action in water claims can often save materials such as cabinets, hardwood floors and carpet.  If you’re not familiar with which companies are reputable in this field, touch base with your insurance carrier or agent to discuss.  Many carriers have preferred vendors for water extraction so that pricing and work expectations are met.

Remember, when it comes to water claims prevention and quick action are the best way to combat it.

SERVICE LINE BACK UP

february 22, 2022

You may have received flyers from local plumbers advertising Service Line and Water Back Up coverage. Your Homeowners policy may provide the same coverages at a better value.

Your service lines are the utility lines located underground and begins at the exterior of your home until it meets the public utility line.  Service Line Coverage will help cover the cost, up to your policy limit, to excavate, replace the service line and then repair the landscape.  Most policies will cover this even if the service line goes bad due to age, wear, tear or deterioration.  The average cost of a service line repair can range anywhere from $3000 - $8000.  We recommend considering this coverage if your service line is older than 20 years.

Water Back Up coverage is coverage for water or sewage back up which occurs OFF site of your home.  For example, during monsoon season waters sweep debris into the public lines causing a blockage.  This in return causes water to back up into your home.  Because the back up originated off-site, your policy will not pay for the resulting water damage.  However, if you opt for this coverage, it will pay for those damages.  Keep in mind that the owner of the public utility only owes for your damages in the event the loss was foreseeable.  Natural causes or an unexpected failure of a line does not constitute a foreseeable event.  Condominium, apartments and duplexes should give serious consideration to this coverage as there are many shared plumbing lines.

All carriers may define some of these terms and coverages slightly differently, so call your agent to discuss these coverages in more detail.
